Many Hollywood stars today do yoga. Photos of these actors and actresses in their yoga pants are snapped by paparazzi. But yoga has been used by many stars on Sunset Boulevard even before it was fashionable.
Here are five Hollywood celebrities from the 1950’s and 60’s who practiced yoga or were photographed doing yoga-like poses.
Audrey Hepburn Does Yoga-like Animal Exercises
Audrey Hepburn was training to be a ballerina in the Netherlands, so it’s not surprising that she an get into many yoga poses with ease. Photographs of her by Bob Willoughby were taken on the set of the movie Green Mansions in 1959. They were described as “animal exercises” with names like “The Panther,” “The Sloth,” “The Cat,” or “The Baby Monkey.”
Marilyn Monroe One of Hollywood’s First Yogis
According to Prasanayoga, who has collected many of Marilyn Monroe’s yoga photos, the all-American blonde bombshell told the press in 1956 that yoga was a permanent part of her workout regimen. Some of the earliest photos of her career (1946-1948) were of her doing yoga asana in a white figure-flattering outfit in.
Eva Gabor Student of Indra Devi
One of the many early Hollywood photos of though to be of Marilyn Monroe is actually a miscredit. The blonde beauty in the white outfit doing (seated forward fold) with famed yoga teacher Indra Devi is actually Eva Gabor. She and her sister Zsa Zsa Gabor were just two of Indra Devi’s many students in the West among both Hollywood and European royalty.
Grace Kelly Stayed Healthy With Yoga
Grace Kelly was not only Hollywood royalty, but also became royalty as the Princess of Monacco when she married Prince Rainier III in April 1956. Not much is known about her personal life as she was an extremely private woman. The practice in Hollywood at the time was to publicize an actresses bust, waist, and hip measurements, however, Kelly refused to ever release her numbers.
In a biography about her beauty routine, Gina McKinnon revealed to Allure that Kelly was self-conscious about her waist – thinking that it was too small and her legs were too long. She also wrote that she took care of herself by hydrating often, always kept hand moisturizer on hand, kept herself energized during long shoots with dried apricots, and didn’t smoke. Kelly did ballet when she was younger and also swam a lot. Some also reported that she enjoyed yoga.
Clark Gable Student of The World’s Oldest Yoga Teacher
Clark Gable was one of the many Hollywood heartthrobs reportedly taught yoga by Tao Porchon-Lynch, one of the world’s oldest yoga teachers who still actively travels and teaches yoga. When Tao was a yougn starlet with MGM, she said she taught yoga to her co-stars on the set. She may have also introduced yoga to other stars of the time such as Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Taylor, and others.
