Some people start their day with a cuppa joe, others start it with a few rounds of Surya Namaskar with the sunrise but why not have both yoga and coffee to kick off the morning? This mom and pop shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, aims to unite the best of both worlds with a yoga and coffee shop where locals can find a sense of community.
Helix Coffee and Yoga is the new venture of Vincent LaVolpa and his wife. They told KRQE News 13 that they wanted to turn their passions into this unique business. LaVolpa is a barista while his wife is a yoga instructor.
They explained that they wanted yoga and coffee at Helix to be reminiscent of old-time cafes where people in the community would gather to discuss anything from politics to music and art. The wanted to nurture a sense of community right in the heart of Nob Hill by also offering daily yoga classes, displaying art by local artists, and also featuring merchandise from area vendors.
The Nob Hill Community Loves Yoga and Coffee
“The community is obviously what allows us to thrive and so we want to provide back to that community,” said LaVolpa.
The Nob Hill community certainly has never seen an establishment quite like Helix and initial reactions to having yoga and coffee under one roof have been positive.
Residents like Jordan Chavez appreciates the environment the mix-use coffeehouse brings to the community. Others, like Mariela Clemenson loves that Helix caters to a variety of people whether they want to start their day with yoga, or coffee, or both!
According to LaVolpa, the name Helix comes from the structure of DNA which is in the form of a double helix.
“We named it Helix because of course our DNA comes from our mom and dad and that’s what we are, we’re a mom and pop shop,” he said.
Helix Coffee and Yoga held it’s grand opening on July 1 and commemorated the event with 108 Surya Namaskars.
